They say nothing lasts forever. To that I would say, a pipe made out of diamonds would last forever. But lets be honest, even Vanilla Ice probably doesn’t have pipes made out of diamonds. It would be too expensive, and no one would even be able to appreciate your diamond pipes because they’re behind walls. For this reason, pipes are made out of more, admittedly utilitarian, but functional materials like steel and copper.
Supply pipes are under constant pressure, meaning they wear faster than drain lines, relatively speaking. They still last a pretty long time. Brass supply pipes can last between 40 to 70+ years. Copper pipes can last in excess of 50 years, and galvanized steel pipes can last between 20 and 50 years. Cast iron drain lines have a lifespan of 75 to 100 years, and PVC drain lines will last indefinitely.
If you live in the mid-Atlantic area and your house was built between the 1970’s and 1990’s, it may have polybutylene piping. These gray, plastic pipes are very prone to breaking. Unfortunately, the outside of the pipes will show no signs of wear. The damage happens on the inside, as chlorinated water causes the pipes to flake from the inside out.
